Godchildren of HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother
HM The late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother had at least thirty-two
godchildren*. Here is the list.
* HM The late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother had twenty-two
godchildren, according to an 2002 online Mirror article titled "Young
Royals Share £60 Million Fortune", by Jane
Kerr. The article stated: "Others almost certain to be remembered in her will
are [...] her 22 godchildren -
who include photographer Lord Lichfield and Princess Diana's sister Lady Sarah
McCorquodale."
It is sometimes stated in biographies and newspaper and Internet articles
that the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth)
were godparents to the future Peter II, King of Yugoslavia. This was not the
case. The Duke and Duchess of York were present at the christening in Belgrade
on 21 October 1923, and although they were known as Koom (godfather) and
Koomista (godmother), they were in fact representatives of the Duke's
father, King George V. ("The Royal Visit to Serbia", The Times, 18
October 1923) This fact is confirmed by Foreign Office correspondence from R.G.
Leigh to Lord Stamfordham (King George V's private secretary), dated 28 January
1929, in which Leigh writes: "You will no doubt remember that on the last
occasion, when Prince Tomislav was born, Kennard [British Minister in Belgrade]
represented The King as godfather at the christening as it was found that having
accepted the position of 'kum' [koom] when the first prince was born [the future
King Peter II], His Majesty was expected to be godfather on all subsequent
similar occasions, in accordance with the somewhat exacting custom of the
country." (FO372/2596 (Royal Matters, 1929, pt 2))
