Barbershop harmony is a pastime I
thoroughly enjoy. Singing in four-part harmony with three other guys produces a
ringing sound that is hard to beat. Worldwide, there are about 30,000 members in
theBarbershop Harmony Society (BHS), with
international headquarters located in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Beginning in 1938, the
society was formed to preserve the truly American music of the 1890's to the
1930's known as barbershop harmony. For more about the history of the society,
follow this link.
The Society
produces a lot of information about barbershop singing and has affiliated
organizations around the globe. For current news about what is happening in
SPEBSQSA, read the monthly publication, and get the scoop on the organization.
Back issues are also
available.
The Society also promotes the
Harmony Foundation service project:
a
not-for-profit organization incorporated as a charitable subsidiary of the
Barbershop Harmony Society, helping to preserve our musical legacy through the
support of vocal music education in schools and communities. General Fund gifts
also provide continuing support of Society Harmony Explosion Camps conducted
across North America to over 5000 young men and their teachers.
