ANDREW FERGUSSON | CATHERINE MITCHELL
Catherine Mitchell, the third daughter of Jacob and Mary Mitchell, was born on April 21st, 1843. At the age of 16, she married Andrew Fergusson at Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbright. The date of the marriage was August 19, 1859.

John, b 1880, Portpatrick, WigtownIn the 1881 census, Andrew Fergusson's birthplace is shown as New Cumnock, Ayrshire. However, when son Jacob died, in his letter to Catherine's parents dated May 15, 1871, he states "I hope I may be able to convey my dear boy to Portpatrick and lay him beside his grandfather". This points towards the Fergusson family having come from the Portpatrick area.
The information in the 1881 census gives the occupations and ages of the Fergusson family members at that time:
Andrew - Game Keeper, age 49 (therefore born 1832)
Catherine - Wife, age 38
William - Game Watcher, age 20
Mary - Domestic Servant, age 18
Alexander - Scholar, age 15
Jessie - Scholar, age 13
Elizabeth - age 8
Andrew George - age 6
Charles - age 4
John - age 1There is little further information known about the Fergusson family other than that Catherine and a married daughter helped take care of Catherine's mother immediately before her death at Kilwinning, Ayrshire in 1887.
